I Am Very Disappointed With Kirsten Gillabrand!

Yesterday morning, Kirsten Gillabrand, or her office, replied to me by name to my opinion on the nomination of Judge Gorsuch. I had included my opinion in response to her survey. (See her full response below.)

My reply:

I read your reply to me and stopped right here in your first sentence:

“…Neil Gorsuch, is as far from the mainstream as the president who appointed him.”

This is not quite true. In fact, absurd! Even if deplorable, Gorsuch is close to the mainstream of an ordinary Republican President, even Pence.

I would prefer Merrick Garland, or someone even closer to my mainstream like a 40 year old Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but that will never happen. So if Judge Gorsuch’s nomination fails, the next nominee will be even closer to the terrifying mainstream of the president – perhaps much closer. God help us, just like him! This is blatantly OBVIOUS!!!

I pray that does not happen! But it won’t happen.

Because we are safe, not from them, but from you, and other Democrats who are fighting an unethical failing political fight, instead of saving their resources and their souls for an ethical fight, winnable or not.

It is beyond my ability to fathom the possibility that you do not already know that stopping Gorsuch will fail, and if successful, leave us worse off. My conclusion must therefore be that your opposition is political, and that one of our finest representatives is engaging in the kind of reprehensible behavior we count on from the Republicans. We must demonstrate to the country that we are above that. Not demonstrate that we are just like them.

I have always recoiled at the claim that, “there is no difference between the parties,” but with behavior like this, I see that difference narrowing.  We should not act like those who intentionally trample on decency to get whatever it is that we want.

Seeing my party descend into the same pit the Republicans have dug for themselves is depressing, abandoning me!

To be the good guys, we must be good!

Subject:The Supreme Court

Joseph,

After reviewing his record, it’s clear to me that President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, is as far from the mainstream as the president who appointed him.

He’s put the rights of corporations over individual rights again and again. He ruled in the Hobby Lobby case that private corporations can dictate the health choices of female employees. And he’s been instrumental in promoting the outrageous right-wing philosophy that corporations are people.

The Supreme Court is our ultimate arbiter of justice, and we cannot put the deciding vote in the hands of a man who values corporations over living, breathing Americans. I’m ready to do everything I can to stop Gorsuch’s appointment – are you with me?

Click here to tell the Senate to reject Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court!

Thank you for taking action.

My original comment to which her reply was directed:

Today I responded to a request by Kirsten Gillibrand to take her survey. I indicated concern for each and every issue she queried.

To her request for my personal concerns, I said:

Opposing Gorsuch is inappropriate when under these circumstances – the Republicans being responsible for the atrocity re Garland – he is a natural choice to follow Scalia.

—–

Oppose positions, not people. I am very concerned that we will fall into the trap of behaving in the reprehensible ways the Republicans have adopted and perfected [sic]. We will not only fall to their level and become undeserving of good peoples’ support, but since they are experts at disingenuity, they will hang our bad behavior around our necks.

To be the good guys, we must be good!
